As Tears go by - Hedi Slimane

Invité pour un an (2000) en résidence à la Kunstwerke de Berlin par Klaus Biesenbach, Hedi Slimane y réalise un journal photographique qui donnera lieu à un livre édité par Steidl/7 et à deux expositions. L’oeuvre intitulée "Berlin" qui sera exposée est une installation tridimentionnelle comportant des projections photographiques. La première exposition se tient à la Kunstwerke en 2004 et ensuite à PS1 à New York la même année. L’installation "Berlin" est entrée dans les collections du MODAM (Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-duc Jean, Luxembourg). Une série des photographies de ce projet est présentée à la galerie Koyanagi à Tokyo en 2004 et ensuite durant l’été 2005 à la maison de la Photographie de Toulon. L’ensemble d’oeuvres intitulé "Berlin" se concentre sur la génération berlinoise actuelle mettant en évidence les comportements, le caractère de certains lieux, expressions d’une liberté nouvelle, des mutations d’une ville où se fondent deux mondes, l’Est et l’Ouest, du romantisme hérité du XIXème siècle inhérent à la culture allemande et à sa transposition dans le monde actuel notamment à travers le rôle central de la musique techno, du rock. L’importance de la musique dans l’imaginaire et son pouvoir à cristalliser les désirs et incarner le mythe pour la génération des années 1970-1980 est un phénomène qu’Hedi Slimane a mis en évidence. D’une certaine manière, il révèle la renaissance, sous une forme actuelle, de cette prédestination de la musique rock à être le vecteur d’un désir de renouveau, de transformation des comportements sociaux. Son second livre "Birth of a cult" (éditions Steidl/7) est en quelque sorte la narration par la photographie de l’incarnation par un être (Pete Doherty) des transgressions d’une génération, de ses questionnements et son élan romantique commun, de son "mal du siècle". La photographie est un des média qu’utilise Hedi Slimane. Elle prend parfois la forme d’installations ("Berlin",2004); récemment, la fragmentation de certaines photographies est apparue("Thank you for the Music", Sprüth Magers Galley, Munich, novembre-janvier 2006), créant un rythme et libérant l’image de son immédiateté, introduisant des espaces de durée, d’inconnu. De nouvelles oeuvres appelées "Stèles murales", comme des miroirs sans tain où se gravent des fragments de textes de chansons, de poésie, mémoire partagée. L’exposition se composera de ces différents travaux et de nouvelles pièces tridimensionnelles. Invited by Klaus Biesenbach to spend a year (2000) in residence at the Kunstwerke in Berlin, Hedi Slimane there produced a photographic diary which would give rise to a book published by Steidl/7, and two exhibitions. The work titled "Berlin" which would be exhibited is a three-dimensional installation including photographic projections. The first exhibition was held at the Kunstwerke in 2004 and then at PS1 in New York that same year. The "Berlin" installation is now part of the collection of the MODAM (Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-duc Jean, Luxembourg). A series of photographs of this project was presented at the Koyanagi Gallery in Tokyo, also in 2004, and then at the Maison de la Photographie in Toulon during the summer of 2005. The set of works titled "Berlin" focuses on the current Berlin generation, highlighting patterns of behaviour, the character of certain places, expressions of a new freedom, changes in a city where two worlds merge, east and west. It enlightens a new Romanticism inherited from the 19th century, which is inherent to German culture, and its transposition in the present-day world, especially through the central role played by techno music and rock. The importance of music in the imagination, and its power to crystallize desires and incarnate myth for the generation of the 1970s and 1980s is a phenomenon which Hedi Slimane has brought to the fore. In a way, he reveals the rebirth, in a current form, of that predestined part played by rock music as the vehicle of a desire for renewal, and for the transformation of patterns of social behaviour. His second book, "Birth of a Cult" (published by Steidl/7) is in a way the narrative, through photography, of the embodiment by a human being (Pete Doherty) of the transgressions of a generation, its questions and its shared romantic fervour, as well as its "mal de siècle". Photography is one of the media used by Hedi Slimane. At times it takes the form of installations ("Berlin", 2004); recently, the fragmentation of certain photographs has appeared, (Thank you for the Music, Sprüth Magers Gallery, Munich, November-December 2006), creating a rhythm and freeing the image of its immediacy, incorporating spaces of time and of unknown. There are also new works called "Steles", like mirrors without silvering in which snippets of the words of songs are engraved, along with poetry, and shared memory. The exhibition will be made up of these different works and new three-dimensional works.
