Salon du Salon accueille l’artiste américaine pour une résidence au Salon du Salon.
Sarah Riggs est une poète, cinéaste et artiste née à New York, où elle vit actuellement, après avoir passé plus de dix ans à Paris. Elle a écrit des livres de poésie en anglais, dont des parties du plus ancien et du plus récent, Eavesdrop et Waterwork (Chax, 2007 et 2020) forment l’ouvrage bilingue anglais-français Murmurations (APIC, 2021). C’est là son cinquième livre traduit en français, après Chaîne de décisions minuscules dans la forme d’une sensation (Le Bleu du ciel, 2010) et trois livres publiés aux éditions de l’Attente. Elle est liée au Maroc et à la langue arabe par le biais de son compagnon, le poète Omar Berrada, avec qui elle a fondé, en 2004, Tamaas, organisation artistique internationale impliquée dans l’environnement, l’art, la justice et le cinéma qui organise un séminaire annuel de traduction poétique.

Illegibility represents a distance overcome. My illegible writings began in Spring 2003, at the outset of the US Invasion of Iraq, when I fell in love with an Arab man in Paris.
These indecipherable writings began with a pictorialization of the Arabic script.
Taken up again in these portraits, they are a gesture which brings us together.
Illegibility can also be a refusal. The Earth—a living being like us—can show off its anger. Here in Marseille, where I have traveled at the invitation of Philippe Munda (Salon du Salon), the excessive heat of this July day can be matched to the heat of helicopters surveying the masses of young protesters out on the streets, grieving and enraged after the police killing of the young Nahel.
The abstraction of these works—their spherical fullness—is my effort to confront the imbalance of the world. My unreadable writings are a response to the writing of oil in the sky, of plastic in the heart of the oceans.
For me, the Earth and we humans are one interconnected being. To make a portrait of someone sensitive to the needs and conditions of the Earth—an artist, a poet, an intellectual—is akin to addressing the state of the Earth, of painting its portrait with the same stroke.
Here is an invitation to the circular movement of life. The Earth, the Sun, and the Moon—these are the energy, the powers of form, which are in us. Live in us... Animals also live in these circles of color.
These works are an attempt at the word love. Love—for the young. For the old.
For one another. For the living. Each portrait shows a person whose acts and words have counted for me. Have given me energy. I have put that energy in the paintings.
