Neotropic - Mark DION & Bob Braine

Depuis 1989, les artistes Bob Braine et Mark Dion, amis proches et compagnons de voyage depuis leurs études à la Hartford Art School en 1981, se sont aventurés dans les forêts tropicales d’Amérique Centrale et d’Amérique du Sud. Attirés par la richesse phénoménale de leur biodiversité mais aussi par la menace pesant sur leur statut, les artistes ont voyagé dans des régions reculées de Belize, du Guatemala, du Venezuela, de la Guyane et du Brésil. Unifier ces explorations a entraîné une réflexion complexe sur la nature même du voyage ainsi qu’une évaluation des projections et des présupposés culturels sur la jungle. Braine et Dion ont tous deux produit d’importants groupes d’?uvres basés sur leurs expéditions dans les Néotropiques. Bob Braine expose des photographies et des dessins s’étendant des années 1989 à 2003. Paysages tropicaux urbains, représentations de systèmes forestiers menacés ou documentation sur les campements et les projets menés sur le terrain. Since 1989, artists Bob Braine and Mark Dion, close comrades and travel compagnions since attending the Hartford Art School together in 1981, have ventured into the tropics rainforests of Central and South America. Drawn by the phenomenally rich biological diversity, as well as the threatened status of the rainforest, the artists traveled to remote locations in Belize, Guatemala, Venezuela, Guyana and Brazil. Unifying these explorations has been a complex consideration of the nature of travel, and an evaluation of the cultural assumptions and projections onto the jongle. Both Braine and Dion have produced major bodies of work based on their neotropical expeditions. Bob Braine will exhibit photographs and drawings spanning the years 1989-2003. All of these works were generated during forays into the neotropics and range from urban tropical landscapes to depictions of compromised rainforest systems to documentation of field site projects and camps.
