La galerie Christophe Gaillard est heureuse de présenter Blue Angels, la première exposition personnelle de l’artiste New Yorkaise Michelle Lopez à Paris.
L’exposition comprend une nouvelle série de quatre grandes plaques d’aluminium réfléchissantes d’environ 3 mètres de haut, qui sont en continuité avec les recherches de l’artiste sur l’histoire de la sculpture et de son éclatement. En l’occurrence, Lopez s’attache à l’héritage du minimalisme afin de mettre en question le caractère fasciste du monolithe. Murale mais de grande échelle, l’oeuvre Blue Angels renvoie à la fois à Chamberlain et à McCracken. Les plaques d’aluminium s’appuient contre le mur, s’affaissant sous l’effet de manipulations, de telle sorte qu’elles évoquent des feuilles de papier, en un refus du fétichisme de l’art bien léché. Chacun de ces objets s’inscrit dans la continuité de la trajectoire de l’artiste qui consiste à examiner les notions de gravité, d’activation de l’oeuvre par le spectateur, mais aussi d’échec.
Michelle Lopez vit et travaille à Brooklyn, New York. Elle possède un Master of Fine Arts de l’Ecole des Arts visuels de New York et un Bachelor of Arts du Barnard College de l’Université Columbia de New York.
Elle a bénéficié d’expositions personnelles à la Galerie Simon Preston, LA><ART, Los Angeles; Deitch Projects, New York; Feature Inc, New York et la Fondation Nicola Trussardi, Milan, Italie.
Elle a participé aux expositions de groupe Greater New York (2000), P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center, Long Island City, New York; Public Art Fund, Metrotech Center, New York (2000) et California Biennal, OCMA, Orange County, CA (2004). Elle a été primée au NYFA Grant (2011). A l’automne 2012, M. Lopez a rejoint le département des arts de la faculté de Yale à plein temps comme professeure de sculpture.

Christophe Gaillard Gallery is pleased to present Blue Angels, the first solo exhibition by New York-based artist Michelle Lopez in Paris.
The exhibition is composed of a new series of (4) ten-foot tall, mirrored, aluminum forms, that continue the artist’s investigation of sculptural history and its breakdown. In this instance, Lopez looks to the legacy of Minimalism in order to examine the fascist quality of the monolith. Specifically large-scale and wall-based, Lopez’ Blue Angels reference both Chamberlain and McCracken. They each lean against the wall, having been manipulated to sag and endowed with a feather-like paper quality that negates the finish fetish. This body of work continues the artist’s trajectory examining notions of gravity, the spectator’s activation of the piece, and finally failure.
Michelle Lopez received her MFA from the School of Visual Arts, New York and BA from Barnard College, Columbia University, New York. Lopez has had solo exhibitions at Simon Preston Gallery, LA><ART, Los Angeles; Deitch Projects, New York; Feature Inc., New York and Fondazione Nicola Trussardi, Milan, Italy.
She was included in Greater New York (2000), P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, Long Island City, New York; Public Art Fund, Metrotech Center, New York (2000); and California Biennial, OCMA, Orange County, CA (2004). She was awarded a NYFA grant in the category of sculpture (2011). In Fall 2012, Lopez recently joined the Yale Department of Art as full time faculty in the department of sculpture. Michelle Lopez lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
