Graphisme en France Issue 29

(Hi)stories of graphic design
Graphisme en France, (Hi)stories of graph design

What constitutes its historiography? And how is it transmitted? What are the resources that allow to constitute its historiography? What is the role of designers themselves in what makes history? These are the questions we wanted to raise in this twenty-ninth edition of Graphisme en France.

We invited Sara De Bondt and Catherine Guiral, graphic designers, teachers and researchers, and Alice Twemlow, professor, researcher, and author, to a conversation that took place at the Cnap the transcription of which constitutes a unique proposition in this publication. This issue of Graphisme en France is illustrated by a selection of books that generate a dialogue out of their reflection on the history of graphic design, combined with larger bibliographical resources. The discussion creates a landscape in which their interrogations, their observations, and their practices lay the groundwork of one or several histories of graphic design. It is a testimony of their commitment, of their inventiveness, and their desire to transmit knowledge.

Graphic designer, author and researcher Juliette Flécheux was tasked with the graphic design of this issue. Trained at isdaT (Toulouse) and at the Atelier national de recherche typographique, she proposes a visual immersion in the books, then in the flow of the conversation. She has chosen the simplicity of black and white, underlined with one color, evoking the visual characteristics of a film script. The issue has been typeset in Matthieu Cortat’s Muoto and Muoto Mono typefaces, distributed by Lyon-based foundry 205TF.

Graphisme en France is an annual journal for graphic design and communication professionals. Every year since 1994, graphic design researchers, sociologists, critics and professionals have here shared their viewpoints and their research on the major themes, giving life to this realm of creative work. A collection of remarkable contributions, commissioned from young researchers who are also exhibition curators, publishers, teachers or designers, which questions various graphic design practices in light of today's context. As every year, the publication is also an occasion to discover a unique graphic design proposal entrusted to young creative talents.
