Calquing - Rachel Levine

Exposition produite et présentée en partenariat avec Triangle France et Glasgow Sculpture Studios et avec le soutien de Creative Scotland.

À l’invitation de Rond-Point Projects, Rachel Levine présente une série de nouvelles œuvres réalisées pendant sa résidence à Triangle France.

Le titre de l’exposition, Calquing, est un terme anglais désignant dans le domaine de la linguistique l’emprunt d’un mot ou d’une phrase à une langue étrangère et transféré littéralement dans la langue cible. Le mot est en l’occurrence lui-même un calque du verbe calquer en Français (copier, reproduire, imiter).

Rachel Levine s’intéresse à la multiplicité des significations offerte par ce mot, et la confusion que génère l’état d’entre-deux déconcertant qu’il indique.

Le titre fait ainsi écho au processus et aux matériaux mis en œuvre dans la production de la pièce principale de l’exposition, une série de moulages en verre transparent spécifiquement réalisée pour et à partir de cet espace.

Il renvoie aussi à la manière dont les œuvres opèrent comme un calque du langage lui-même, par la traduction de l’ineffable dans un vocabulaire matériel. À travers ce langage de la matérialité, Levine tente de mettre en exposition et de rendre compte de l’expérience de certains états psychologiques et affectifs et de leur influence sur notre perception des espaces qui nous environnent.

Les processus de la production sculpturale constituent indissociablement un medium privilégié de la pratique de Rachel Levine et ce sur quoi s’étaye la dimension conceptuelle de sa démarche. Levine emploie en particulier des processus de moulage et de réplication pour explorer les possibilités de transformation de l’image dans la matérialité d’un objet comme un moyen d’interroger les perceptions psychologiques et les états affectifs.

Rachel Levine (née en 1988) vit et travaille à Glasgow, Écosse. Elle a été diplômée d’une licence en Sculpture à The Glasgow School of Art en 2013. Ses récentes expositions personnelles incluent Soft Chaos, CCA Glasgow et Material Anxiety, Café Concrete, The Hayward Gallery, Londres.

For her exhibition at Rond-Point Projects Rachel Levine will show a series of new works developed whilst on residency at Triangle France.

The title for the exhibition, Calquing, is derived from the English linguistic terminology for a loanword translation, a word or phrase borrowed from another language which is translated into a literal equivalent within the target language. The word is in and of itself a calque from the French verb Calquer (to copy).

Levine’s interest in the word is in its multiplicity of meanings, the confusion created in its unsettling in-betweeness. 
Within these multiplicities the title comes to represent the process and materials used in the creation of one of the major pieces for the exhibition, a series of transparent glass casts made specifically for the gallery space. 
The title also refers to the way in which the works themselves are utilized as a calque for language itself through the translation of the ineffable into a material vocabulary.

Through this material vocabulary Levine attempts to expose the experiences of certain psychological and affective states and their influence on our perceptions of our surrounding environments.

Rachel Levine employs the processes of sculptural production as a not only the medium for her work but also as its conceptual underpinning. 
Often working with casting and replication processes Levine is interested in transforming the image and materiality of an object as way of interrogating psychological perceptions and affective states.

Rachel Levine (b.1988) lives and works in Glasgow, Scotland. She graduated from The Glasgow School of Art with a BA in Sculpture in 2013.
Her recent solo exhibitions include Soft Chaos at The CCA Glasgow and Material Anxiety, Café Concrete at The Hayward Gallery in London. Her group exhibitions include Fold Up Snap On, The Pipe Factory, Glasgow, Vernissage, The Royal Standard, Liverpool and New Contemporaries at The Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh.

Levine was artist in residence at Triangle France from September to December 2015; past residencies include The Banff Centre, Canada and The Scottish Sculpture Workshops.
