Alain LE QUERNEC

Né le 15 novembre 1944 au Faouët (France), vit et travaille à Quimper.

En 1962, après des études supérieures à Paris, Alain Le Quernec devient professeur de dessin et réalise sa première affiche imprimée. Son séjour à l’Académie des beaux-arts de Varsovie, dans les années soixante-dix, auprès du peintre et affichiste Henryk Tomaszewski, influence d’une manière décisive son parcours artistique. Il ordonne alors l’espace, les mots et les symboles selon l’exigence formelle de l’école polonaise. L’affiche permet une prise de position sur un sujet et d’exprimer un point de vue, de faire circuler des idées et des informations. Affichiste engagé, Alain Le Quernec réalise des affiches pour des causes locales, nationales ou internationales. Il a signé des affiches politiques et sociales (grèves, marées noires, Amnesty international..) et a souvent travaillé dans le domaine de la culture (festivals, films, théâtre…) et de la santé (campagnes anti-tabac…). Divers journaux et en particulier Le Monde, l’ont invité dans leurs pages (illustrations, interventions libres…). Depuis 1972, il vit à Quimper. L’inscription sur le territoire breton marque son oeuvre. Alain Le Quernec est l’un des grands graphistes français. Il est aussi organisateur d’un grand nombre d’expositions.

After completing his higher education in Paris in 1962, Alain Le Quernec became a drawing teacher and designed his first printed poster. His time spent at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw with the painter and poster artist Henryk Tomaszewski in the 70s greatly influenced his artistic career, leading him at the time to arrange the layout, words, and symbols of his works according to the formal standards of the Polish school. Poster design was a way for him to take a stance on a subject, express his point of view, and share ideas and information. As a militant poster artist, Alain Le Quernec has designed posters for local, national and international causes. He has created political and social posters (strikes, oil spills, Amnesty International…) and has often worked on cultural events (festivals, films, theatre…) and health-related issues (anti-smoking campaigns…). He has also collaborated with a number of newspapers, particularly Le Monde, on illustrations and carte blanche interventions. He has lived in Quimper since 1972, making this Breton setting a main feature of his work. Alain Le Quernec is considered one of the greatest French graphic designers. He has also curated a large number of exhibitions.
